There were lots of kids on Beckwith Place and I was one of them. My name is Rita Iwanski and I lived on 80 Beckwith Place. All of us thought of Mrs. Owen as the neighborhood "Mom" because some of us had moms who worked away from home. We always knew who to go to in case there was trouble or we fell and needed something bandaged up - we went to Mrs. Owen who always welcomed us with a smile and reassurance that things would be fine. She was sweet, lovely and kind and gave some of the best hugs ever.
I'm 64 years old now which means I have known and been delightfully acquainted with Mrs. Owen for practically my whole life. As life went on I moved away from Rutherford but would stll see Mrs Owen on rare occasions. My Uncle Stanley would sometimes ask her to accompany him to a wedding or some other occasion and I would marvel at how those 2 could really smoke the dance floor! She always looked fantastic too. And still gave the best hugs. Funny but the last time I saw her was many years later when my Uncle was recovering from a lung cancer operation and she was bringing him Communion. She just never forgot the people she cared for. Ever.
The really special thing about Mrs. Owen (I still can't call her Loretta) was that she had this ability to make YOU feel like special one - that you were talented, charming and just a beautiful human being when deep inside most of us knew that all those qualities belonged to her.
Heaven is lucky to have her.
